As broadcast consultant and freelance journalist, Sharon Alcock offers a range of services from podcast production and consultancy to media awareness training. Sharon is a broadcaster with seventeen years’ experience. Formerly a BBC Correspondent specialising in Health and Social Affairs, she is a Sony Radio Academy Award winner. Her career spans national and local radio reporting and production, as well as TV reporting and documentaries. Sharon continues to broadcast in an 'expert' capacity for national broadcasters and writes for broadsheets and magazines in a freelance capacity.

I went to conduct an interview with Lord Darzi this morning, for one of my clients, doctors.net.uk. Lord Darzi is a renowned surgeon who works in London and has pioneered new, less invasive surgery techniques. He was invited to be a health minister by Gordon Brown after completing a review of health services in London and advising the government on how the system should change. Now he's conducting a similar review of the NHS' English services as a whole. He's a controversial figure with doctors as he has 'a foot in both camps'. So how did I find him?

I have been asked to chair a national conference on Self-Care.. aimed at health professionals who want to argue for the budgets to support people who want to do more to take care of their own health needs. The Working in Partnership Programme, conference organisers, asked me to write a piece for their website about why I am happy to take on the role: Quite simply, whilst we would all love to think that the NHS can look after us well, at the time we need it, for as long as we would like, I know from my work that sadly we can’t expect this level of care at all times. I believe our communities and the NHS will be healthier in the future only if people take more responsibility for their own health and care needs at an earlier stage.
